Welcome To The DIY Therapist Blog!
Hi, I’m Kerry and thanks for stopping by! I am a pediatric occupational therapist who is super passionate about creating things by hand. I decided to start this blog as a way to share my ideas for creating your own therapy-based projects. This is a project I’ve had on my mind for sometime now, and I am so excited to be getting started.
After finishing my master’s degree in occupational therapy (2006), I worked in private practice pediatrics. Over the years, I have had some pretty great opportunities working with some pretty amazing therapists and super great families. Besides working in the clinic, I have also worked in early intervention, hippotherapy (therapeutic horseback riding), and aquatic therapy. I often made things for the families I worked with like weighted lap pads, handi-writers, raised lined paper, buttoning devices, and fine motor games for kids to take home.
Across this site, you will find projects for individuals across the lifespan not just pediatrics. I try to create projects from items typically found around the home, at Goodwill, or from the local hardware or hobby craft store. I love using items typically headed for recycling bin. And I am a total fan of up-cycling and re-purposing items.
Whether its adaptive equipment, memory aids, sensory tools, or fine motor gadgets, I am the one behind those projects. At times though, I may enlist the help of my husband because he is pretty awesome at tech-y stuff.
A little more about me:
I grew up in northwest Georgia, exploring through the woods and going on adventures with my sister, riding horses, and playing soccer. Some of my fondest memories of my childhood are hiking in the woods, jumping from rock to rock across the creek, and spending my days dirty and sweaty at the barn hugging on the horses.
I met my husband on a cattle drive in Wyoming (see pictures above), we moved to Seattle early in our marriage (absolutely miss Seattle- it’s such a fabulous city), and we now call Tennessee our home (we love it here too!). I am a homeschooling mom of three, baker of too many sweets, and in the summertime you will often find me wading through the creek with my kids trying to find little treasures.
Thank you again for stopping by. I’m glad you are here, and I’m honored you have joined me on this new adventure. Please contact me with any questions or project ideas. I’d love to hear from you.
